Description

Michigan was the 11th state to enact a mandatory paid sick leave law. While the law hasn’t gone into effect yet, it has been amended and renamed the Michigan Paid Medical Leave Act. The Act requires employers in Michigan to provide their employees with accrued paid leave to use for their own or their family members’ medical needs. Join us to understand the key points of the amended law, whether your existing policies need to change and what you need to do to be compliant.

Elizabeth L. Peters, JD Related Seminars and Products


Elizabeth was born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She began her career as a general and special education teacher before returning to school to earn her law degree. As a teacher, Liz was president of her local teachers association and served as an association representative at the regional, state and national levels.

Liz has been a labor and employment attorney for 33 years. She served as in-house counsel and staff attorney for U.S. Steel, Pittsburgh, Pa., litigating labor and employment, workers compensation, and personal injury/product liability cases in various jurisdictions throughout the U.S. As a member of U.S. Steel’s negotiations and arbitration staff, she took part in the negotiations of two national agreements and negotiated numerous local agreements. Until mid-January of this year, she was in private practice for almost 20 years as a partner with Masud Labor Law Group where she served as a chief negotiator for the collective bargaining of various industry contracts and advised employers on all aspects of labor and employment law matters.

Elizabeth has been a frequent presenter at state and local conferences and seminars, including MICPA, and has authored numerous articles on labor and employment law topics. After Liz retired from private practice in mid-January of 2019, she joined the State of Michigan’s Bureau of Employment Relations as a Labor Mediator where she assists employers and labor unions in reaching amicable agreements in collective bargaining and grievance matters.

Elizabeth earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Michigan State University and her law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She has been an active community member serving on the boards of Saginaw Habitat for Humanity, the Saginaw Chapter of the American Red Cross, Junior Achievement of Northeast Michigan, Saginaw Northwest Kiwanis, the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club, the Saginaw County Bar Association, and as an elected Bay City Commissioner and a member of the Bay City Charter Commission. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Bar and is admitted to practice in various state and federal courts in Michigan and various U.S. District Courts throughout the U.S.

Jennifer Fields has been with Michigan’s Wage and Hour Division since 1994.  She is a graduate of Cleary College majoring in Business Management.  Jennifer started her career as an investigator, then became a regional manager.  Jennifer has been the Wage and Hour Division manager since 2013.   Jennifer is a member of the Secondary to None Toastmasters Club and has received the Advanced Communicator Silver and Competent Leader status. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her 6 grandchildren.
