John Maise enjoys all aspects of litigation and applies his talents as an associate in the firm’s Labor & Employment practice.

John received his Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Michigan where he competed as a member of the men’s rowing team. He remained in the Big Ten to pursue his Juris Doctor at the prestigious University of Minnesota School of Law, supplementing his classroom learning by volunteering as a student attorney in the school’s Tax Clinic, developing his written and oral advocacy skills in moot court, and clerking for a Michigan district court judge, in the law department of a large software company in St. Paul, and for the Chief Judge of the Minnesota Tax Court.

Returning home to Michigan, John parlayed his interest in tax into a position with a Detroit-area boutique law firm practicing tax law on a national scale. There, he represented clients across the country in tax audits, IRS settlements, and U.S. Tax Court matters, which frequently required extensive negotiation and document review. Looking to expand his litigation skills, John joined a personal injury practice, successfully handling motor vehicle negligence and no-fault insurance cases at every stage, from pre-suit investigation through discovery to resolution. He regularly drafted motions and responses and appeared for the oral arguments, tallying a number of courtroom victories.

Outside the office, John is active in the Ingham County Bar Association as associate editor of its Briefs magazine. He is also an avid skier and snowboarder (time and weather permitting), and a painter of World War II miniatures, paying the same attention to detail as he does for his clients and his legal work product.
